Creatures of Sonaria has five diets, and across the full roster of 481 released creatures they split 223 Carnivore, 152 Herbivore, 59 Omnivore, 25 Photocarnivore and 22 Photovore. Diet is a fixed property of each creature rather than something you pick, and the only mechanical field it moves reliably is appetite, the size of the hunger and thirst bar, which runs from 40 to 250 across the roster.

Every number on this page is computed from the game's own creature stat table, the 4 September 2026 revision, which carries 481 creatures with 51 fields each and no missing values. Where a ranking is misleading without context, the page says so.

Read that table twice before drawing a conclusion from it. The damage column looks like a clean diet ranking and it is not one, for reasons the rest of this page sets out.

Four of the five diets carry the same median appetite of 70, which is also the roster median. The names of the first three are self-describing. For Photovore and Photocarnivore the stat table records only the label, and the source dossier for this site does not document the in-game feeding mechanic behind either, so this page does not describe one. What it can do is show exactly how those 47 creatures differ from the rest of the roster, which is more than any current tier list attempts.

What diet actually costs you: appetite and the drain fields

Three fields govern feeding. Two of them turn out to be almost constant.

  • appetite is the capacity of the food and water bar. Range 40 to 250, median 70.
  • hungerDrain is 1 for all 481 creatures. There is no variation to exploit.
  • thirstDrain is 1 for 479 of 481.

The two exceptions in the thirst field are worth flagging rather than interpreting. Pleuremiert (Tier 4 Carnivore, appetite 95) carries thirstDrain 95, and Veishyadar (Tier 5 Carnivore, appetite 100) carries thirstDrain 100. In both cases the value equals that creature's own appetite, which looks like a field duplicated during data entry rather than a creature that drinks a hundred times faster than everything else. Treat both as data artefacts until the module is corrected, and do not plan a build around them.

So the practical cost of feeding is set almost entirely by appetite, and appetite tracks body size, not diet:

The median climbs from 60 at Tier 1 to 100 at Tier 5, while every tier keeps a wide spread. The single strangest row in the roster is Gubbin, a Tier 1 herbivore with an appetite of 200, double the Tier 5 median. At the other end, Cantapodi (Tier 1 Photocarnivore) and Wixpectr'o (Tier 2 Herbivore) both sit at the floor of 40.

The two creatures at the ceiling of 250 are Turrim, the Tier 5 Photovore, and Venuella, the Tier 5 Photocarnivore. Turrim also carries the longest growth time in the game at 150 minutes. Tier lists that place Turrim near the top do not mention either figure, which is the point of publishing them.

One conversion is documented rather than inferred: on Capukoralu's rendered stat panel an appetite of 75 displays as one thirst bar lasting 37.5 minutes. That is a single observed rendering, so this page quotes it as an example and does not extend the arithmetic to the other 480 creatures.

Does diet predict combat power? Mostly no

This is the question the search brings people here for, and the honest answer needs two tables.

The raw medians say carnivores hit hardest, 250 against 150 for herbivores, a ratio of 1.67. But diets are not evenly spread across body sizes, and tier is body size, not power. Carnivores are the largest cohort in the game and also the biggest:

The two diets with the highest median damage are the same two with the highest share of large bodies. So the correct test is to hold tier constant and compare within it. Median damage, by tier and diet, with the number of creatures in each cell in brackets:

The carnivore-to-herbivore damage ratio falls from 1.67 across the whole roster to 1.52, 1.61, 1.46, 1.04 and 1.25 within Tiers 1 to 5. At Tier 4, where 131 of the 481 creatures sit, the diet gap is effectively gone: 265 against 255 is a difference of one bite in twenty-six. At Tier 5 photocarnivores post the highest median of any cell in the table, 347.5, on a sample of six.

The finding, stated plainly: diet is a weak predictor of damage once you control for body size, and at Tier 4 it is not a predictor at all. Most of the apparent carnivore advantage is that carnivores skew large. Anyone who tells you to pick a carnivore for damage is describing a correlation that mostly belongs to a different field.

Where diet does show up: the extremes

Medians hide the tails, and the tails are where diet still leaves a mark. Diet mix at the top of the damage ranking, against the share each diet holds of the whole roster:

Carnivores take 15 of the top 20 where an even split would give them roughly 9, and photocarnivores take 2 where the expectation is 1. Omnivores are entirely absent from the top 20 and their ceiling is the lowest of the five. So the tail is genuinely carnivore-heavy even though the middle of the distribution is not.

Two more cross-checks make the case that damage is the wrong single lens. Among the top 20 by health, herbivores lead with 9 entries to the carnivores' 7. Among the top 20 by sprint speed, herbivores again lead with 9, omnivores take 6, carnivores take 5, and neither light diet appears at all. A herbivore roster that looks weak on the damage column is the same roster that owns the health and speed ceilings, including the 17,000 health shared by Geortharoc and Abyssal Geortharoc and the 205 sprint of Nimoona. Diet against movement type

Diet correlates with movement type far more cleanly than it does with damage, and this is the one crosstab no competing tier list has published:

All 47 light-diet creatures are Terrestrial, Flier or Glider. Not one is Aquatic or Semi-Aquatic. Omnivores contribute exactly one aquatic creature. If you play in the water, your diet options are effectively carnivore or herbivore, and that is a harder constraint than any damage median on this page.

One smaller pattern: median nightvision is 2 for herbivores and 3 for all four other diets, on a 1 to 4 scale.

What this page will not tell you

Stats are not the whole game. Two creatures with identical damage can play nothing alike because of ability loadout, bite cooldown, hitbox and turn rate, and none of that is captured by a diet median. A creature's abilities are the field that most often overturns a stat comparison.

This site also does not cover trading values, for any creature or any diet. Accurate valuation lives inside two trading platforms' private marketplace data, it cannot be sourced or checked, and publishing a number we cannot verify would break the one rule that makes the rest of this page worth reading.

Where you see a diet described as best or worst in an SS/S/A/B/C list, that is the ranking author's opinion. PocketGamer's list, the most widely copied of them, states in its own text that it is "for guidance only" and that a well-played C-tier creature can match an S-tier one. It cites none of the 51 stat fields. Neither do the lists that reproduced it.

Photovore is one of the five diet values and the rarest, held by 22 of 481 creatures, including Turrim, Kragnyx and Lorolael. The data shows something the name does not: none of the 22 is Aquatic or Semi-Aquatic. All photovores are Terrestrial, Flier or Glider, and the same is true of all 25 photocarnivores.

Does diet change how fast you get hungry?

No, not through the drain fields. The hungerDrain field is 1 for all 481 creatures and thirstDrain is 1 for 479 of them, so hunger and thirst tick at the same rate whatever the diet. What varies is appetite, the size of the bar, which runs from 40 to 250 with a median of 70 and tracks body size rather than diet.

Which creature has the largest appetite?

Turrim and Venuella share the maximum at 250, the only two creatures at that value, and they are the only Photovore and Photocarnivore in the top bracket. The oddest entry is Gubbin, a Tier 1 herbivore with an appetite of 200, more than the Tier 5 median of 100.

Should I pick a creature based on its diet?

Diet is not a setting you choose, it comes attached to the creature, so it works as a filter rather than a decision. Use it to narrow the roster, then compare the numbers that actually differ: damage, health, sprint speed, stamina and growth time. This site does not cover trading values for any diet, because accurate valuation lives in two trading platforms' private marketplace data that cannot be sourced.
